CDL permit test passing score
You need 80% on every CDL knowledge test to earn your commercial learner's permit and each endorsement. That is 40 of 50 on general knowledge, 20 of 25 on air brakes, 24 of 30 on hazmat and 16 of 20 on the rest. PassRig mock exams use the same counts and the same line, so a pass in the app means something on test day. The official rules for the commercial driver's licence live with the FMCSA; your state DMV or DOT administers the test itself.

CDL test questions and answers, written from the manual
PassRig's question bank holds 480 questions across the eight tests, each one written from the FMCSA CDL manual and tagged with the section it comes from. The sample questions on this site are a small slice of that bank. The app holds the rest, builds timed mock exams from it, and brings back the questions you keep missing until they stick.
CDL test questions
How many questions are on the CDL test?
It depends on the test. General knowledge has 50 questions, hazmat has 30, air brakes has 25, and combination vehicles, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger and school bus have 20 each. Most states use these federal counts.
What is the CDL permit test passing score?
80% on every knowledge test. On the 50-question general knowledge test that means 40 correct answers; on a 20-question endorsement test it means 16.
Are CDL test questions the same in every state?
The content is federal. Every state writes its knowledge tests from the same FMCSA CDL manual, so the topics, the question counts and the 80% pass mark match. Your state DMV or DOT administers the test, sets appointments and handles fees.
Which CDL tests do I need?
Everyone takes general knowledge. Class A adds combination vehicles. Air brakes keeps the air brake restriction off your licence. Hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger and school bus are endorsements you add for the work you want.
Are these practice questions free?
Yes. Every test page on this site has free sample questions with the answer and an explanation. The PassRig app adds the full bank, timed mock exams and AI explanations.
