Montana CDL practice test

Getting a commercial driver's licence in Montana starts with the CDL knowledge tests. The content is federal: every state, Montana included, writes its tests from the FMCSA CDL manual, so the general knowledge test has 50 questions, the endorsement tests have 20 to 30, and the passing score is 80% on each. The Montana driver licensing agency administers the test; the rules behind it are published by the FMCSA. Try the free Montana CDL practice questions below, then pick a full test.

Five questions from the general knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicles banks, the three tests most Montana Class A applicants take first. Show the answer to read the explanation.

  1. 'Implied consent' means that by holding a CDL you have agreed to:

    • Let your employer search your home
    • Drive any vehicle the company owns
    • Take a test for alcohol when asked to by a law enforcement officer
    • Work overtime when required
    Show answer
Answer: C. Take a test for alcohol when asked to by a law enforcement officer

Refusing an alcohol test is treated like failing it. A refusal brings the same penalties as driving with a BAC at or over the legal limit.

  2. Prescription or over-the-counter drugs may be used while driving only if:

    • You take a smaller dose than prescribed
    • You drink coffee with them
    • They were bought in the state you are driving in
    • A doctor says the drug will not affect your ability to drive safely
    Show answer
Answer: D. A doctor says the drug will not affect your ability to drive safely

Many legal drugs cause drowsiness or slow reactions. Check the label and ask the doctor or pharmacist. Pay close attention to warnings about drowsiness or operating machinery.

  3. Using amphetamines ('uppers' or 'pep pills') to stay awake while driving is:

    • Illegal and dangerous; they can make you feel alert, but you will not be able to drive safely
    • Allowed on trips over 500 miles
    • Safe if you also drink plenty of water
    • Recommended by the manual for night driving
    Show answer
Answer: A. Illegal and dangerous; they can make you feel alert, but you will not be able to drive safely

Stimulants mask fatigue instead of curing it and can lead to poor judgment and a sudden crash in alertness. The only cure for being tired is sleep.

Source: FMCSA CDL Manual, Section 2.22 (Other Drugs)

  4. The only cure for fatigue is:

    • Coffee or energy drinks
    • Sleep
    • Loud music and an open window
    • A heavy meal
    Show answer
    Answer: B. Sleep

Tricks like coffee, cold air, or music do not remove fatigue; they only hide it for a short time. If you are drowsy, stop and sleep.

Source: FMCSA CDL Manual, Section 2.22.1 (Be Ready to Drive)

  5. Most people need about how much sleep each night to be fully rested?

    • 4 hours
    • 5 to 6 hours
    • 7 to 8 hours
    • 10 to 12 hours
    Show answer
    Answer: C. 7 to 8 hours

Short sleep builds up a sleep debt that makes you less alert and slows your reaction time. Getting enough sleep before a trip is the best way to stay awake while driving.

How the Montana CDL knowledge test works

You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.

Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by Montana and change over time, so check the state driver licensing agency before you go. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.
