Maine CDL practice test
Getting a commercial driver's licence in Maine starts with the CDL knowledge tests. The content is federal: every state, Maine included, writes its tests from the FMCSA CDL manual, so the general knowledge test has 50 questions, the endorsement tests have 20 to 30, and the passing score is 80% on each. The Maine driver licensing agency administers the test; the rules behind it are published by the FMCSA. Try the free Maine CDL practice questions below, then pick a full test.

In hot weather, how often should you stop and check your tires?
- Every 30 minutes
- Every 8 hours
- Only at the start and end of the day
- Every 2 hours or 100 miles
Show answer
Answer: D. Every 2 hours or 100 milesHeat builds up in tires on hot pavement and can cause a blowout or a fire. Check pressure and temperature every two hours or 100 miles.

If a tire is too hot to touch, you should:
- Stay stopped until it cools off; do not let air out
- Let some air out so the pressure drops
- Pour water on it and keep driving
- Drive faster so the wind cools it
Show answer
Answer: A. Stay stopped until it cools off; do not let air outHeat raises tire pressure, but letting air out means the tire will be under-inflated once it cools, which builds even more heat. Wait for it to cool, or the tire may blow out or catch fire.

On very hot days, tar can 'bleed' to the road surface. These spots are:
- Safer because the tar fills in cracks
- Very slippery
- Only a problem for motorcycles
- Softer and better for traction
Show answer
Answer: B. Very slipperyBleeding tar makes a slick film on the pavement. Watch for shiny dark patches on hot days and slow down before you reach them.

You need to add coolant to a hot engine that does not have a recovery tank. You should:
- Remove the cap right away so the steam can escape
- Pour cold water in through the overflow hose
- Wait until the engine cools, then turn the cap slowly to the first stop to release pressure before removing it
- Add coolant while the engine is running at high rpm
Show answer
Answer: C. Wait until the engine cools, then turn the cap slowly to the first stop to release pressure before removing itA hot cooling system is under pressure, and opening the cap suddenly sprays scalding coolant. Let it cool, protect your hands, and open the cap in stages.

The safe speed for a long downgrade depends on:
- Only the posted speed limit
- Only the gear you climbed the hill in
- How much fuel is in the tank
- The total weight of the vehicle and cargo, the length and steepness of the grade, the road conditions, and the weather
Show answer
Answer: D. The total weight of the vehicle and cargo, the length and steepness of the grade, the road conditions, and the weatherGravity pulls a heavy vehicle faster on a downgrade. Pick a speed that is safe for your load, the grade, and the conditions, and never go faster than the posted truck speed for the hill.

How the Maine CDL knowledge test works
You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.
Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by Maine and change over time, so check the state driver licensing agency before you go. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.
