Oregon CDL practice test

Getting a commercial driver's licence in Oregon starts with the CDL knowledge tests. The content is federal: every state, Oregon included, writes its tests from the FMCSA CDL manual, so the general knowledge test has 50 questions, the endorsement tests have 20 to 30, and the passing score is 80% on each. The Oregon driver licensing agency administers the test; the rules behind it are published by the FMCSA. Try the free Oregon CDL practice questions below, then pick a full test.

Five questions from the general knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicles banks, the three tests most Oregon Class A applicants take first. Show the answer to read the explanation.

  1. On a truck with air brakes, the parking brake control is usually:

    • A red, eight-sided knob
    • A lever on the steering column
    • A yellow, diamond-shaped knob that you pull out to set the brakes
    • A foot pedal to the left of the clutch
    Show answer
Answer: C. A yellow, diamond-shaped knob that you pull out to set the brakes

Pulling the yellow knob out lets the air out of the spring brake chambers and the springs apply the brakes. Pushing it in releases them. Older vehicles may use a lever instead.

  2. The modulating control valve found on some vehicles lets you:

    • Adjust the cut-in and cut-out pressures
    • Change how fast the tanks drain
    • Turn the ABS on and off
    • Apply the spring brakes gradually with a hand lever, for example if the service brakes fail
    Show answer
Answer: D. Apply the spring brakes gradually with a hand lever, for example if the service brakes fail

The further you move the lever, the harder the spring brakes apply. It is spring-loaded so you can feel the braking, and it can be locked in place to hold the vehicle parked.

  3. A separate air tank connected to a 'dual parking control valve' is used to:

    • Release the spring brakes so you can move the vehicle a short distance in an emergency after main air pressure is lost
    • Supply air to the trailer
    • Run the windshield wipers
    • Fill the tires
    Show answer
Answer: A. Release the spring brakes so you can move the vehicle a short distance in an emergency after main air pressure is lost

When main air is lost, the spring brakes come on. Pushing the second control in releases them from the separate tank, but it is spring-loaded and pops back out, so you can only move a short way before the brakes apply again.

  4. Antilock brakes (ABS) have been required on truck tractors with air brakes built on or after:

    • March 1, 1998
    • January 1, 2005
    • March 1, 1997
    • March 1, 1990
    Show answer
    Answer: C. March 1, 1997

Tractors needed ABS from March 1, 1997, and other air-brake vehicles such as trucks, buses, trailers, and converter dollies from March 1, 1998. Many older vehicles have been retrofitted.

  5. Does ABS shorten your stopping distance?

    • Yes, it always cuts stopping distance in half
    • Yes, but only on dry pavement
    • Yes, because it applies the brakes harder
    • Not necessarily; its job is to help you keep control and prevent wheel lockup
    Show answer
Answer: D. Not necessarily; its job is to help you keep control and prevent wheel lockup

ABS senses wheels about to lock and reduces pressure to those wheels. That keeps you from skidding and losing steering control, but you should still drive and brake as if the vehicle had no ABS.

How the Oregon CDL knowledge test works

You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.

Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by Oregon and change over time, so check the state driver licensing agency before you go. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.

Oregon CDL test questions

How many questions are on the Oregon CDL test?

The Oregon CDL general knowledge test follows the federal model: 50 questions, 40 correct to pass. Endorsement tests are shorter: air brakes 25, hazmat 30, and combination vehicles, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger and school bus 20 each.

What is the passing score on the Oregon CDL permit test?

80% on every knowledge test, the same pass mark used across the United States.

Where do I take the CDL knowledge test in Oregon?

At the Oregon state driver licensing agency (the DMV, DOT or equivalent). Check its website for locations, appointments and current fees; the test content itself comes from the FMCSA CDL manual.
