Idaho CDL practice test

Getting a commercial driver's licence in Idaho starts with the CDL knowledge tests. The content is federal: every state, Idaho included, writes its tests from the FMCSA CDL manual, so the general knowledge test has 50 questions, the endorsement tests have 20 to 30, and the passing score is 80% on each. The Idaho driver licensing agency administers the test; the rules behind it are published by the FMCSA. Try the free Idaho CDL practice questions below, then pick a full test.

Five questions from the general knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicles banks, the three tests most Idaho Class A applicants take first. Show the answer to read the explanation.

  1. The average perception time for an alert driver is about:

    • 1 3/4 seconds
    • 1/4 second
    • 5 seconds
    • 10 seconds
    Show answer
    Answer: A. 1 3/4 seconds

Perception time is how long it takes your eyes to see a hazard and your brain to recognize it. At 55 mph that 1 3/4 seconds covers about 142 feet before you even start to react.

  2. How should you take a curve in a heavy vehicle?

    • Brake hard halfway through the curve
    • Slow to a safe speed before the curve, then speed up slightly while in the curve
    • Keep the posted highway speed through the curve
    • Shift to neutral and coast through
    Show answer
Answer: B. Slow to a safe speed before the curve, then speed up slightly while in the curve

Braking in a curve can lock the wheels and cause a skid, and taking a curve too fast can roll the vehicle. Slow down before you enter, then a slight increase in speed keeps the vehicle stable.

  3. On a wet road, you should reduce your speed by about:

    • 5 mph
    • One-half
    • One-third, for example from 55 mph to about 35 mph
    • Nothing, as long as the tires are good
    Show answer
Answer: C. One-third, for example from 55 mph to about 35 mph

Wet pavement cuts traction, so the manual says slow by about a third. On packed snow cut your speed by half or more, and on ice slow to a crawl and stop driving as soon as you safely can.

  4. On packed snow, you should reduce your speed by:

    • One-tenth
    • One-third
    • It is not necessary to slow down with chains on
    • One-half or more
    Show answer
    Answer: D. One-half or more

Packed snow gives very little grip, so cut your speed at least in half. On ice, slow to a crawl and get off the road as soon as it is safe.

Source: FMCSA CDL Manual, Section 2.6.2 (Speed and Surface Conditions)

  5. If the road is icy, the manual says you should:

    • Slow to a crawl and stop driving as soon as you can safely do so
    • Keep your normal speed but increase following distance
    • Drive faster to get off the ice sooner
    • Use the retarder to keep control
    Show answer
Answer: A. Slow to a crawl and stop driving as soon as you can safely do so

Ice offers almost no traction. The safest action is to reduce speed to a crawl and get off the road until conditions improve.

How the Idaho CDL knowledge test works

You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.

Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by Idaho and change over time, so check the state driver licensing agency before you go. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.
