New Mexico CDL practice test

Getting a commercial driver's licence in New Mexico starts with the CDL knowledge tests. The content is federal: every state, New Mexico included, writes its tests from the FMCSA CDL manual, so the general knowledge test has 50 questions, the endorsement tests have 20 to 30, and the passing score is 80% on each. The New Mexico driver licensing agency administers the test; the rules behind it are published by the FMCSA. Try the free New Mexico CDL practice questions below, then pick a full test.

Five questions from the general knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicles banks, the three tests most New Mexico Class A applicants take first. Show the answer to read the explanation.

  1. An alcohol evaporator is used to:

    • Clean the brake drums
    • Reduce the risk of ice forming in the air brake valves and lines in cold weather
    • Lubricate the slack adjusters
    • Raise the air pressure in winter
    Show answer
Answer: B. Reduce the risk of ice forming in the air brake valves and lines in cold weather

Some systems put alcohol into the air to lower the freezing point of any moisture. In cold weather, check the alcohol level and refill it every day. Draining the tanks daily still matters.

  2. Brake lag in an air brake system is the time it takes for air to reach the brakes. At 55 mph on dry pavement this adds about how much to your stopping distance?

    • Almost nothing
    • About 32 feet
    • About 100 feet
    • About 300 feet
    Show answer
    Answer: B. About 32 feet

Air brakes take roughly half a second to flow through the lines after you press the pedal. At 55 mph that half second is about 32 feet of travel added on top of perception, reaction and braking distance.

  3. In a dual air brake system, before driving you should wait until pressure in both systems is at least:

    • 45 psi
    • 60 psi
    • 100 psi
    • 150 psi
    Show answer
    Answer: C. 100 psi

Pressure should build from about 85 to 100 psi within 45 seconds, and both the primary and secondary gauges must read at least 100 psi before you move. The warning light and buzzer should go out as pressure rises.

  4. During the applied leakage test on a single vehicle, with the engine off and the service brake held down, the air loss should not exceed:

    • 1 psi per minute
    • 3 psi per minute
    • 6 psi per minute
    • 10 psi per minute
    Show answer
Answer: B. 3 psi per minute

After the first drop when you press the pedal, hold it for a minute. A single vehicle may lose up to 3 psi in that minute; a combination vehicle up to 4 psi. More than that means a leak to fix before driving.

  5. When you pull hard on a slack adjuster, it should move no more than about:

    • One inch
    • Two inches
    • Three inches
    • Half an inch
    Show answer
    Answer: A. One inch

With the parking brakes released and the wheels chocked, pull each slack adjuster. If it moves more than about one inch where the push rod attaches, the brake is out of adjustment and needs fixing. Out-of-adjustment brakes are the most common brake problem found at inspections.

How the New Mexico CDL knowledge test works

You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.

Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by New Mexico and change over time, so check the state driver licensing agency before you go. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.
