New York CDL practice test

Getting a commercial driver's licence in New York starts with the CDL knowledge tests. The content is federal: every state, New York included, writes its tests from the FMCSA CDL manual, so the general knowledge test has 50 questions, the endorsement tests have 20 to 30, and the passing score is 80% on each. The New York driver licensing agency administers the test; the rules behind it are published by the FMCSA. Try the free New York CDL practice questions below, then pick a full test.

Five questions from the general knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicles banks, the three tests most New York Class A applicants take first. Show the answer to read the explanation.

  1. The safety relief valve on an air tank usually opens at:

    • 100 psi
    • 125 psi
    • 150 psi
    • 200 psi
    Show answer
    Answer: C. 150 psi

The safety valve protects the tank from too much pressure and is set at about 150 psi. If it ever opens, the governor is probably faulty and the system needs service.

  2. "Fanning" the brakes (repeated quick applications) on a long downgrade is dangerous because it:

    • Wears the tires
    • Uses up air faster than the compressor can replace it, and the lost pressure can let the spring brakes apply
    • Makes the engine brake fail
    • Locks the steering
    Show answer
Answer: B. Uses up air faster than the compressor can replace it, and the lost pressure can let the spring brakes apply

Every application uses air. Rapid pumping can drain pressure quickly, and brakes used that way also overheat. Use snub braking in a low gear instead: firm, spaced applications.

  3. Brake fade is caused by:

    • Too much air pressure
    • Excessive heat from using the brakes too much
    • Low oil in the compressor
    • Driving in cold weather
    Show answer
Answer: B. Excessive heat from using the brakes too much

Brakes stop you by turning motion into heat. Too much heat and the drums expand and the linings lose grip, so the same pedal pressure gives less braking. Let the engine and gears hold your speed so the brakes stay cool.

  4. If the yellow ABS malfunction lamp stays on while driving, you should:

    • Stop immediately; the brakes will not work
    • Keep driving and braking normally; you still have regular brakes, just no anti-lock
    • Pump the brakes constantly
    • Use only the parking brake to stop
    Show answer
Answer: B. Keep driving and braking normally; you still have regular brakes, just no anti-lock

ABS only adds control during hard braking. If it fails, the normal service brakes still work. Drive and brake as you always would and have the system checked.

  5. When should you avoid using the parking brake?

    • When parked on a hill
    • When the brakes are very hot, or wet in freezing weather
    • When the trailer is loaded
    • Whenever the engine is off
    Show answer
Answer: B. When the brakes are very hot, or wet in freezing weather

Setting the parking brake on very hot brakes can damage them as they cool, and wet brakes in freezing weather can freeze locked. Let hot brakes cool first; in freezing weather, drive gently to dry them before parking, or use wheel chocks instead.

How the New York CDL knowledge test works

You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.

Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by New York and change over time, so check the state driver licensing agency before you go. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.
