Louisiana CDL practice test
Getting a commercial driver's licence in Louisiana starts with the CDL knowledge tests. The content is federal: every state, Louisiana included, writes its tests from the FMCSA CDL manual, so the general knowledge test has 50 questions, the endorsement tests have 20 to 30, and the passing score is 80% on each. The Louisiana driver licensing agency administers the test; the rules behind it are published by the FMCSA. Try the free Louisiana CDL practice questions below, then pick a full test.

What is the best advice for driving in heavy fog?
- Use your high beams so you can see farther
- Follow the taillights of the vehicle ahead closely
- Do not drive; pull into a safe parking area and wait for the fog to lift
- Drive at normal speed but use the flashers
Show answer
Answer: C. Do not drive; pull into a safe parking area and wait for the fog to liftFog can be so thick you cannot see hazards in time. If you must drive, slow down, use low beams and fog lights, be ready to stop, and never try to pass.

Before driving in winter weather, why should you check that the radiator shutters and winterfront are not blocked with ice?
- Ice on the shutters makes the headlights dim
- Blocked shutters cause the brakes to lock
- Ice adds too much weight to the front axle
- Blocked shutters or a closed winterfront can cause the engine to overheat
Show answer
Answer: D. Blocked shutters or a closed winterfront can cause the engine to overheatThe shutters and winterfront control air flow to the radiator. If ice holds them closed, the engine cannot shed heat and can overheat even in cold weather.

On slippery roads, how should you turn and brake?
- As gently as possible
- Quickly, so the tires grip before they slide
- Only with the parking brake
- With the retarder on for extra braking
Show answer
Answer: A. As gently as possibleSudden steering or braking on a slick surface breaks traction. Start gently, turn gently, brake gently, and leave extra space so you do not need to do anything suddenly.

Before driving through deep water or a flooded area, you should:
- Speed up to get through quickly
- Slow down, shift into a low gear, and keep light pressure on the brakes while crossing
- Shift to neutral and coast
- Turn off the engine to keep water out of it
Show answer
Answer: B. Slow down, shift into a low gear, and keep light pressure on the brakes while crossingDriving slowly in low gear with light brake pressure keeps water from soaking the brake linings so badly. Once across, keep light pressure on for a short distance to heat and dry the brakes.

After driving through water, how do you dry out wet brakes?
- Stop and let the vehicle sit for an hour
- Drive at highway speed so the wind dries them
- Drive slowly in low gear with light pressure on the brake pedal for a short distance
- Pump the brakes hard at a stop
Show answer
Answer: C. Drive slowly in low gear with light pressure on the brake pedal for a short distanceWet brakes can be weak, grab, or pull to one side. Gentle brake pressure while moving slowly makes enough heat to dry the linings. Make sure nobody is close behind before you do this.

How the Louisiana CDL knowledge test works
You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.
Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by Louisiana and change over time, so check the state driver licensing agency before you go. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.
